about

Five years ago I went into the studio for 2 days with my band The New Old Things. At the end of that weekend we had a record called, “Whichever Way Home” and all these years later it still holds a special place in my heart. I think very fondly about that record and the year of shows that followed and all of the songs from that record still find their way into setlists to this day.

Being that five years felt significant for a record that I’m still enthusiastic about I had hoped to mark the anniversary in some way. Initially I had thought about a live performance, but COVID had other plans. Then I considered a live stream, but it’s hard to feel like you’re celebrating something when you’re alone and staring into a camera. I considered releasing the demos for the album, but because of the way this one came together there are really only demos of seven of the songs. I thought about releasing the b-sides, but some of them have already made it on to later records and maybe the others will too someday.

Then I remembered that we had a recording of the release show. To celebrate the release of the album we invited a bunch of people to come to the very studio where we had made the record. We stood in a circle with people sat all around us and we performed the record front to back. It was intimate and loose and a lot of fun. Our friends at Stone Arch gave us some beer to share and the whole thing was recorded too. Listening back to that recording brought me right back to that time and put a big smile on my face.

So now, five years later, that live record is coming out. It seems fitting to celebrate the anniversary of the record the exact same way we celebrated the release of the record.

I love these songs, I love the guys that played them, and I love this recording. You get all ten songs from “Whichever Way Home,” you get an extra song as an unexpected encore, and you get every single moment in between with no edits. You’ll hear our take on country, folk, rock & roll, spaghetti western, and atmospheric songs. You’ll get stories about the songs, stories about the recording process, and a few laughs too. Guitars go out of tune, voices crack, and it is perfect.

I had never thought of this live recording as something that I would be returning to years later, and I think that is clear in the best possible way. It sounds like friends in a room sharing something they’re excited about with other friends. And I love it.

And for the the record, the Prince joke isn’t about Prince. It’s about people on a bandwagon. Please don’t send the Purple Army after me.

Thanks for listening to “Whichever Way Home” and for checking out the live record too. I look forward to being at a show with all of you soon. In the meantime, turn it up loud and party like it’s 2016.

Cheers.
