Written and recorded in 6 days in May, the record is called “It Never Really Was What It Used to Be.”

I recorded it and mixed it myself, my friend Caleb mastered it for me, and I designed the cover.

It is quieter and louder than the first one. It has more heavy stuff, more drone stuff, more folky stuff, more atmospheric stuff. I spent those 6 days writing and recording this music while figuring out how I could make a drum sound like an explosion, how I could make a guitar sound like wind, and I played lap steel on a recording for the first time in years. There are really loud guitars, really quiet pianos, and a few recurring themes throughout the album. The point is, there’s a lot on there.

But what I hear on it is the rush of inspiration and creativity that comes from creating something out of nothing in less than a week. And I hear the ease and excitement of making an instrumental record because I was inspired to do it, rather than forced to by throat problems.

I played three shows in a row last week and my throat felt great. And I’m still proud of this instrumental record and happy to release on my terms, in the proper spirit.

So, here it is.
