I wrote these songs in the summer of 2020 while I was living in COVID America and dealing with throat issues that made it all but impossible to sing. After several visits to various doctors I finally started feeling some relief in October and immediately sat down to record these songs.

I spend a lot of time on stages by myself with a guitar, but my recordings never seem to come out that way. In fact, more often than not they end up as fairly loud rock & roll affairs. This collection is finally just me and a guitar, making it as close as one can get to hearing these songs exactly as I wrote them. They were recorded live in my living room, on the same couch I was sitting on when I wrote them.

As my throat continues to improve I could certainly go back and take another run at all of these songs, but I’ve chosen to leave them as they are. I think the timing and method of a recording matters, and years from now I will be able to look back on these recordings as my first venture back after a very trying time.

I’m proud of these songs. They say what I want to say and they sound the way I want them to sound. I don’t always get to say that about every song, but I’m thankful this came out the way it did.

There is some struggle here. There is some heartbreak and some triumph and some frustration and some solace. I hope you hear that.

one of my favorites this year, and i'm crossing my fingers it gets a physical release. chris porterfield remains one of the best lyricists, writing songs that conjure up emotions that feel so tangible. his form of storytelling is like sitting down with someone and having a conversation; everything is laid out right in front of you, ready to be picked up.
